Contour Line Examples  (Download PDF)
Contour Line Sensitivity  (Download PDF)

1. Line – The basic element of all art, line is a type of mark that contains both direction and length.

2. Line Sensitivity – Line that creates minute changes or differences in the structure or contour of the subject, and conveys a strong sense of mass, volume, form, weight, dimensionality, and emotion.

3. Line Variation – Line that varies in width, lightness and heaviness to convey depth, mass, form, volume, weight, and dimensionality.

 4. Contour Line – The line that defines the form or edge of a shape, the outline.

 5. Cross-Contour Line – Lines that run perpendicular to the contour lines of the shape.

6. Implied Line – An incomplete line, or one that is inferred (or implied) by the viewer through elements in the composition, but which is not physically there.

7. Continuous-Line – The line remains unbroken from the beginning to the end of the drawing.  The artist does not lift the drawing tool off the page at all during the drawing process.

8. Blind Contour Line –  The artist draws the contour (outline) of a subject without looking at the paper or canvas.

In-Class:  Choose at least 5 individual objects.  In your sketchbook or on the larger paper, do 5 separate Contour Line Drawings of the objects– an individual drawing of each object on its own using only Contour Line:  NO VALUE.  Next, do 2 Continuos-Line Drawings from the objects, and then 2 Blind Contour Line Drawings, for a total of 9 individual drawings.  You can draw several of them per page.

  • 5 Contour Line Drawings.
  • 2 Continuous-Line Drawings.
  • 2 Blind Contour Line Drawings.

Homework Assignment:
Choose one of the three previous sketchbook drawings on Composition, and create one finalized 18″ x 24″ drawing.  Plan out the drawing first, rough it in with light sketchy lines and make sure to cover the entire page before you start in on any particular detail.

vangogh-starry_night_edit

“Starry Night” by Van Gogh uses multiple focal points which grab the viewer’s attention and pull them into the artwork, and then all  of the objects, movement of clouds and swirls, and textures work as directional forces to guide the eye around the composition.

Homework Assignment: Due – 1/20/14
Do three separate sketchbook drawings on any subjects of your choosing in any media from class utilizing strong and purposeful Composition, and answering the following questions:

  1. What is the Focal Point?
  2. Directional Forces – where does the eye go?
  3. How does the composition use the space?

The composition should be made to keep the viewer’s eye constantly moving around the drawing without shooting the eye off the page.
